by H. N. Humphreys

Soon for Sale on Ebay
These original prints are well over 157 years old.

All taken from the book titled
British Butterflies And Their Transformations
Arranged and illustrated by
H. N. Humphreys Esq., with characters and descriptions
by J. O. Westwood Esq., F.L.S.

Size: 27cm x 21cm or 11" x 8.5"
Published Year: MDCCCXLVIII (1848) by William Smith, 113 Fleet Street, London
Condition: Very good condition.

Naturalist and artist Henry Noel Humphrey, whose boundless enthusiasm for butterflies prompted him to compile this book, the first definitive work on British butterflies.  He created this magnificent work in 1841 and this print was taken from his publication (published in 1848) a Photostat copy of the title page will also be included.

These plates show a group of butterflies in several stages, from caterpillar to full-fledged, set against a floral background. The colours are rich, and beautifully executed.  They make beautiful pictures and are unique antique works of art to treasure.  Framed well, these hand coloured lithographs make a welcome addition to any rooms décor.

The image area is smaller than the 27cm x 21cm card sheet (that is gold edged on 3 sides). The complete sheet is shown here.  The card is an attractive light cream color and is blank on reverse.  There are some slight brown tinges around the edge of the sheet, but all well beyond what would be the framed image area, the colour is as close as possible in these high definition photographs.  Please note these photographs have a 'copyright reserved' watermark that is not on the originals being offered for sale. Remember these are original antique lithographs, not reproductions, that are now well over 157 years old. These prints are the rarer and more desirable, early edition of Humphrey's work, not to be confused with the later editions often offered!  Some slight spots or specks are mentioned in the individual descriptions if any, but really these are very clean bright prints.
